Residentie Orkest
Orchestra
The Residentie Orchestra was officially founded on Sunday afternoon, November 20th, 1904, when founder Henri Viotta lifted his baton for the first time in the Building for the Arts and Sciences in The Hague. Viotta, a lawyer, conductor, composer, and head of conservatoire, had been tirelessly been working for the impact of music on society, and the need for an exceptional orchestra in The Hague, for twelve years. From 1949 onwards, the orchestra built an international reputation with chief conductors such as Willem van Otterloo, Jean Martinon, Ferdinand Leitner, Hans Vonk, Jevgeni Svetlanov, Jaap van Zweden, and Neeme Järvi. From 2018, the young Nicholas Collon was their chief conductor. From 2021, their chief conductor has been German conductor Anja Bihlmaier.
