In 2006, during the first Cello Biënnale, Jean-Guihen Queyras performed an unforgettable Haydn Concerto in C. Those who were there still talk about it to this day. At the time it was with Amsterdam Sinfonietta, now it’s with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. This orchestra played at the Biënnale for the first time in 2010 with Beethoven’s Triple Concerto, performed with Queyras also, as well as Kristian Bezuidenhout. The young Dutch violinist Charlotte Spruit, in 2022 winner of the Johann Sebastian Bach Competition in Leipzig, will be playing the violin part. 

Jean-Guihen Queyras

Jean-Guihen Queyras (Montreal, 1967) has been involved with the Biënnale from the very start and has given countless memorable performances over the years at the festival. Queyras is known for his broad repertoire. He performs cello concertos by Haydn and Vivaldi just as well as he performs music by Dallapiccola, Kurtág, Ligeti, Webern, Boulez, and Gilbert Amy. He is a part of various chamber ensembles, including a piano trio with Isabelle Faust and Alexander Melnikov, and an ensemble with tombak specialists Kevan and Bijan Chemirani and kemenche player Sokratis Sinopoulos. In 2016 and 2018, he performed as soloist in Joël Bons’ Nomaden, which was composed specially for Queyras and the Atlas Ensemble. Queyras is a professor at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg and is the Artistic Director of the festival Rencontres Musicales de Haute-Provence. In 2022, Jean-Guihen Queyras received the Anner Bijlsma Award at the Opening Concert of the Cello Biënnale.

Kristian Bezuidenhout

Kristian Bezuidenhout was born in South Africa, grew up and began his piano studies in Australia, continued his education in New York, and currently lives in London. He studied piano with Rebecca Penneys, fortepiano with Malcolm Bilson, harpsichord with Arthur Haas, and basso continuo with Paul O’Dette. In 2001, he won both the first prize and the audience prize at the Bruges Fortepiano Competition. He is a regular guest soloist with ensembles such as the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Les Arts Florissants, the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. He has guest directed – from the keyboard – the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Collegium Vocale (Ghent), Tafelmusik, the Dunedin Consort, and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, among others. Kristian Bezuidenhout has been a part of the artistic direction of the Freiburger Barockorchester since the 2017/2018 season and is the principal guest conductor of The English Concert.

Charlotte Spruit

Charlotte Spruit (Netherland, 2000) began her violin studies aged 4 with Coosje Wijzenbeek. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music with David Takeno, and with Ying Xue at the Royal Academy of Music. She is currently pursuing her Master's degree at the Royal Academy of Music with Rachel Podger, Pavlo Beznosiuk, and Ying Xue. In 2022, Charlotte won the first prize as well as the audience prize and the Genuin Classics prize at the Leipzig International Johann Sebastian Bach Competition. In 2023, Charlotte was a prize-winner at the Young Classical Artists Trust (YCAT) International Auditions held at Wigmore Hall. Charlotte is also prize winner at many other national and international competitions, such as the Kloster Schöntal International Violin Competition, Concours International Arthur Grumiaux, and the Oskar Back Violin Competition. In 2020, Charlotte received the Anton Kersjes Violin Prize.  As a soloist, Charlotte has played with numerous orchestras, including the Residentie Orkest The Hague, The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Pauliner Barockensemble, and Ensemble Esperanza.   Charlotte plays an 18th-century anonymous Italian violin, kindly on loan from the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation.
