Six semi-finalists will play, accompanied by a string quintet, the Fantasy on Little Russian Songs by David Popper. These are not 'little songs': 'Little Russia' was the name for Ukraine long ago.
Beethoven's Fourth Sonata is the only piece in the Second Round that most cellists will have in their repertoire.
The participants could choose between two atmospheric pieces with modern techniques of Japanese or Finnish origin. The other choice was between two extremely difficult pieces composed by two of the greatest cellists of the past generation.
