During the first Cello Biënnale in 2006, we celebrated the 75th birthday of Sofia Gubaidulina, who was there at the festival, with a performance of all her works starring the cello. At this edition, Capella Amsterdam and Pieter Wispelwey impressed the audience with the spectacular Canticle of the Sun.

Previous Biënnales have also featured romantic works for cello and choir by Rudi Tas and Anton Arenski. Despite her young age, Mathilde Wantenaar is one of the most performed composers of The Netherlands. Choir and cello are no strange combination to her, as she studied both cello and voice for some time at conservatoire.

Johannes Moser

Johannes Moser (München, 1979) started playing the cello aged eight. From 1997, he studied with David Geringas at the Hochschule für Musik “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. The beginning of his international career was marked when he won the highest prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in 2002. Johannes Moser is a distinct contemporary musician with a broad interest in expanding the scope of classical music. He plays at any and all possible venues and events. He has premiered various new compositions and has recently been involved with commissions for Julia Wolfe, Ellen Reid, Andrew Norman, and Jelena Firsova, among others. Johannes Moser has been a part of the Cello Biënnale several times, including as a jury member for the National Cello Competition. Moser is a professor at the Musikhochshule in Cologne. He plays an Andrea Guarneri cello from 1694.

Kristina Blaumane

Kristina Blaumane (Riga, Latvia) studied at the Latvian Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. She became the principal cellist of Amsterdam Sinfonietta in 1988, and in 2007 she was appointed principal cellist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Apart from being a highly demanded soloist, she is also a fervent chamber musician. She has performed alongside musicians such as Isaac Stern, Yo-Yo Ma, Mischa Maisky, Yuri Bashmet, Gidon Kremer, Leif Ove Andsnes, and Janine Jansen. Kristina is a great champion of contemporary music. She has given numerous premieres and has had various works composed for her, including cello concertos by Dobrinka Tabakova, Kristaps Pētersons, Pēteris Plakidis, and Artem Vassiliev. At the Cello Biënnale in 2008, she gave the premiere of Dobrinka Tabakova’s cello concerto.

Pieter Wispelwey

Pieter Wispelwey began his cello studies with Dicky Boeke and went on to study at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Anner Bijlsma, as well as in the United States with Paul Katz. In 1992, he was the first cellist to receive the Dutch Music Prize. Pieter Wispelwey feels at home on a modern cello just as much as on a Baroque cello. As a soloist, he performs all over the world with a remarkably broad range of repertoire. He has an impressive discography – he has recorded more than 30 CDs – which includes three recordings of Bach’s complete cello suites. In 2013, he released a CD with works by Schubert performed on authentic instruments, as well as a CD with Lalo’s cello concerto combined with Saint-Saëns’ rarely played second cello concerto. He currently teaches at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf. Pieter Wispelwey plays a Giovanni Battista Guadagnini made in 1760 and a Baroque cello made by Pieter Rombouts in 1710.

Daniel Reuss

Daniel Reuss (1961) studied with Barend Schuurman at the Rotterdam Conservatory and founded the Oude Muziek Koor Arnhem when he was 21 years old. A ‘dedicated non-specialist’, he conducts repertoire spanning across many styles, from music composed around the year 1200 to the most contemporary music. Since 1990, he has been the Artistic Director and chief conductor of Cappella Amsterdam, where he had been singing for many years prior to his appointment. He was the chief conductor of the RIAS Kammerchor in Berlin from 2003 to 2006. From 2008 to 2013, Daniël Reuss combined his work as the Artistic Director of Cappella Amsterdam with a position as chief conductor of the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, and has been the chief conductor of the Ensemble Vocal Lausanne since June 2015. Daniël Reuss performs as a guest conductor with ensembles all over the world, such as the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, MusikFabrik, Vocal Consort Berlin, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century, Collegium Vocale Ghent, and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
