Sebastiaan van Halsema

Sebastiaan van Halsema is an all-rounder who got hooked on contemporary music during his time studying in London. Raised in a musical environment, Sebastiaan van Halsema started playing the cello at six years old. Some years later, he was accepted into the Young Talent department at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he studied with Maarten Mostert for six years. Sebastiaan continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in Londen studying with Louise Hopkins. In 2008, he graduated cum laude for his Bachelor’s degree and received the prestigious Concert Recital Diploma. In 2010, he earned his Master’s degree.
Sebastiaan regularly performs as a soloist with renowned orchestras. At the Biënnale in 2022, he shared the stage with Lidy Blijdorp as one of the soloists in Trevor Grahl’s double concerto.
Sebastiaan has been the co-principal cello of Phion since 2012 and has been the cellist of Asko|Schönberg since 2019.
