Guus Janssen writes a concertino for the four cellists who were previously successful in the performance of Martijn Padding’s Biënnale Galop.

The Italian cellist Francesco Dillon makes his debut at the Cello Biënnale and stars as the soloist in Silvia Borzelli’s new concerto. Asko|Schönberg adds to the conversation in the solo concertos and in Thomas Adès’ Chamber Symphony van Thomas Adès.

Larissa Groeneveld

Larissa Groeneveld (1966) graduated in 1990 from the Conservatory of Amsterdam as a student of Dmitry Ferschtman, after which she continued her studies with Natalia Gutman in Stuttgart. In 1988, she founded the Osiris Trio with Ellen Corver and Peter Brunt, with whom she went on to achieve great international success. Her repertoire is broad, spanning from Bach to contemporary composers, some of whom composed for her especially. At the Cello Biënnale, she has given premieres of works by Yannis Kyriakides, Theo Verbey, Martijn Padding, and Mathilde Wantenaar, among others. Larissa Groeneveld is a professor at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

Sebastiaan van Halsema

Sebastiaan van Halsema is an all-rounder who got hooked on contemporary music during his time studying in London. Raised in a musical environment, Sebastiaan van Halsema started playing the cello at six years old. Some years later, he was accepted into the Young Talent department at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, where he studied with Maarten Mostert for six years. Sebastiaan continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in Londen studying with Louise Hopkins. In 2008, he graduated cum laude for his Bachelor’s degree and received the prestigious Concert Recital Diploma. In 2010, he earned his Master’s degree. Sebastiaan regularly performs as a soloist with renowned orchestras. At the Biënnale in 2022, he shared the stage with Lidy Blijdorp as one of the soloists in Trevor Grahl’s double concerto. Sebastiaan has been the co-principal cello of Phion since 2012 and has been the cellist of Asko|Schönberg since 2019.

Asko|Schönberg

Asko|Schönberg is one of the most renowned groundbreaking ensembles for contemporary music. Their most important pillars are quality, experimentation, and innovative programming with an eye for current affairs. With a rich network of musicians, conductors, composers, versatile young creators, and partners from various artistic disciplines, Asko|Schönberg contributes to the future of performing arts. Their focus lies on the stimulation and creation of new work by today’s creators. From its homebase in Amsterdam, the ensemble operates all over the world. Their performances in concert halls, festivals, and interdisciplinary shows feature the top repertoire by the great 20th-Century composers as well as the most contemporary 21st-Century work, with an emphasis on pieces by living composers.  Asko|Schönberg has given numerous premieres and performances of rarely played cello concertos at previous editions of the Cello Biënnale Amsterdam.

Francesco Dillon

Francesco Dillon (Turin, 1973) earned his degrees under the tutelage of Andrea Nannoni in Florence. He went on to follow lessons with Anner Bijlsma, Mario Brunello, David Geringas, and Mstislav Rostropovich. At the same time, he was studying composition with Salvatore Sciarrino. In 1993, he was one of the founders of Quartetto Prometeo, a string quartet with which he has won numerous international prizes. Dillon is also a part of the Alter Ego Ensemble, an Italian contemporary music group with which he travels all over the world.  Since 2020, he has held the cello Master Course at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (Firenze). He has been the Artistic Director of the contemporary music Festival Music@villaromana in Florence and has held the same position at “CastelCello” Festival in Brunnenburg since 2019.

Jeroen den Herder

Jeroen den Herder completed his studies with distinction with Maria Hol, Dmitry Ferschtman and Christopher Bunting. Den Herder gained several music awards. Among them a first prize-winner of the “Postbank Sweelinck” cello competition and the first prize of the Foundation of the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam. He’s been an active chamber music player, performing as a member of the Ruysdael Quartet.   Between 1999 and 2012 Jeroen was the cellist of the Nieuw Ensemble, one of the leading Dutch ensembles for contemporary music. Fulfilling the function of artistic director CelloWercken Zutphen, which embodies both the International Cello Festival and the Cello Academy, he commissioned contemporary composers the write for the festival, leading to inspired projects such as The Tibetan Book of the Death and Passion of Innocence. Den Herder has been a dedicated teacher ever since he took a professorship at the age of 22 at the Utrecht Conservatory. He’s been a regular guest teacher at the Conservatory in Minsk (2003-2010) and visiting guest- professor at the University in Tainan, Taiwan. Furthermore he has given masterclasses in Holland, Belgium, Spain, Germany, France, China and Israel. Today he helds positions as a teacher at the Conservatories of Utrecht and Rotterdam.

Timora Rosler

Israeli-Dutch cellist Timora Rosler won the first prize at the Stuttgart International Cello Competition in 1996. In 1997, she was awarded the ‘Vriendenkrans’ prize of the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. A year later, she received a special prize for her interpretation at the XI. International Bach Competition in Leipzig. She also won the highest prize at the Caltanisetta International Duo Chamber Music Competition in Italy in 1996, together with her regular pianist Klára Würtz, as well as the Concerto Competition at the Aspen Music Festival in the United States and the Clairmont Competition in Israel. Rosler graduated from Yale University, where she studied with Aldo Parisot. She also graduated as a performing musician studying with Dmitry Ferschtman at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. Timora Rosler has performed at the Cello Biënnale several times already. She performed with the four cellists of the Cello Biënnale Band, with which she gave multiple premieres and will now perform Guus Janssen’s Concertino. Timora Rosler is a professor at the Utrecht Conservatory.

Gregory Charette

Gregory Charette (Los Angeles, 1987) is a conductor and programmer deeply committed to the performance and promotion of new music. He is currently music director of Oerknal, a contemporary music collective dedicated to reimagining and reinvigorating the concert experience. He studied with Pierre Boulez at the 2011 Luzern Festival and has served as conductor in the Holland Festival’s John Cage Centennial as well as the Aldeburgh Festival’s Emerging Composers Program, where he has worked closely with Oliver Knussen and Colin Matthews. He made his debut with Asko|Schönberg in the opening concert of the 2012 Gaudeamus Festival. Gregory earned his Bachelor of Music in composition from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where he studied with Lewis Nielson and participated in master-classes with Helmut Lachenmann, David Lang, and Rebecca Saunders. He moved to The Netherlands to study orchestral conducting at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. His primary teachers were Jac van Steen and Kenneth Montgomery. Engagements have included concerts with Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Residentie Orkest, RTSH Orchestra (Albania), Kosovo Philharmonic, Noord Nederlands Orkest, Philharmonie Zuidnederland, Asko|Schönberg, Nieuw Ensemble, Ensemble Contrechamps, Britten-Pears Ensemble and SONEMUS Ensemble (Bosnia).
